English players want to keep Southgate after EURO

  • Gareth Southgate's contract with the English Football Association (FA) is set to expire this year. Therefore, EURO 2024 will be the last tournament for the 53-year-old manager in charge of the Three Lions.

Facing the prospect of parting ways with Southgate after the tournament in Germany in June, Harry Maguire has voiced his support for the manager to continue leading the England national team. In a recent interview, the Manchester United center-back stated that all players support Southgate to stay in his position.

"We're not focusing on the World Cup but the EURO. If Gareth Southgate is the one who helps the team succeed, then we want him to stay as long as possible. Southgate earns respect from all players and even those who have worked under him," Maguire said.

"You can see the difference in the team's position before and after Southgate took over. Some may argue that England now has more talented players. But before that, we also had many talented players but didn't succeed," Maguire added.

Since taking over the England national team in September 2016, Gareth Southgate has led the Three Lions to the World Cup 2018 semi-finals, EURO 2020 final, and the World Cup 2022 quarter-finals. However, England has yet to secure a major title under his management.

Despite reaching deeper stages, England under Southgate has not won a major tournament. The team possesses a squad of highly-rated players globally. If England fails to win EURO 2024, the FA would have little reason to extend Southgate's contract.

During the interview, Harry Maguire also shared that he has absolute faith in Gareth Southgate. This has been evidenced by Southgate consistently calling up Maguire regardless of his form at Manchester United.

If Southgate departs from the England national team after EURO 2024, he could potentially work with Maguire at Manchester United. The club's owner, Jim Ratcliffe, is considering recruiting Southgate to Old Trafford as a replacement for Erik ten Hag.
